Understanding Emissions

In our modern age where climate change and global warming are never far from the headlines, how we use energy is something everyone needs to think about, balancing the needs of our lives with the impact we have on the world.

While every facet of our daily activities contribute, use of our cars and what emissions our cars produce is often the most obvious way we consider our impact.

Car manufacturers like Mitsubishi are always striving to make our cars more efficient and environmentally friendly, using new technology and expertise to make cars that go farther, consume less energy and produce fewer emissions.

Emissions Explained Petrol and Diesel Plug-in Hybrid

Emissions explained

NOx

Air pollution

Contributes to air pollution, especially in cites where traffic density is high

road traffic pollution

Road traffic (buses, cars and lorries) contributes roughly 40% of N0x

Industrial pollution

28.5 million tonnes a year produced across all industry

Natural pollution

8.6 million tonnes a year produced naturally from thunderstorms

Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) are a collection of gases produced from the reaction among nitrogen and oxygen during combustion of fuel at high temperatures. They are commonly created from industrial sources and also occur naturally during thunderstorms due to the extreme temperature of lightning.

Nitrogen Oxides are especially challenging where traffic is highly concentrated such as in cities, and are a significant contributor to air pollution such as smog that can have long-term impacts on human health.

CO2

Human pollution

C02 emissions occur from almost all human activity and are a huge challenge

Transportation CO2

In total, all transportation accounts for roughly 27% of global C02 emissions

Fossil fuel

Half the C02 released from fossil fuels is absorbed by plants and oceans

Green house gases

Half stays in the atmosphere and is one of the most common green house gases

Carbon Dioxide is a common gas with a multitude of applications including food, chemical, medical and transportation industries. It is the most signifcant long-lived greenhouse gas in the Earth’s atmosphere and since the Industrial Revolution has been increasing in quantity, primairly due to use of fossil fuels and deforestation.

Carbon Dioxide is believed to be a significant contributor to the increase of Earth’s average temperature (commonly called global warming or climate change), the consequences of which are complex and ever-changing, but include rising sea levels and damage to ecological systems.

Diesel and petrol engines have improved

All new Mitsubishi’s are built to the latest Euro 6 emissions standards, meaning they emit around a third of the NOx and a fifth of the particulates of a car built before 2009.

All our cars have advanced filtration systems

All Mitsubishi cars come equipped with filtration systems designed to reduce emissions as much as possible.

Particulate Filters - Diesel Models

Captures and stores exhaust particulate matter (soot), and then through a process called regeneration, the accumulated soot is burnt off at very high temperatures, leaving the filter ready to capture more soot.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation - All Models

Recirculates a portion of the exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders, reducing the temperature of the engine and therefore the amount of NOx produced.

3 Way Catalytic Converter - All models

All catalytic converters turn toxic pollutants like carbon monoxide into less hazardous emissions. A 3 way catalytic converter is specifically designed to reduce NOx emissions as well.
